I will never sleep in my nightclothes again -- attack victim Magda Burger, Boksburg:
Geskiet in kaping: Ma, seun vertel
‘Mense help en is wonderlik’
‘Ek slaap nooit weer in my nagklere nie. One must be prepared: everything was so confusing. I was covered in blood. I was searching for my son and they didn't want me to see what state my husband was in.' Quote from Mrs Magda Burger of Boksburg, whose husband was shot in the chest and her son Dylan 17 was short in a leg when he went to attack two black men who had just shot his dad outside their front door. The men were trying to hijack the family car. (Feb 15 2014 7am) Her son was just pulling on his school uniform when he heard the car horn outside - and when he looked throught the living room window he saw the two gunmen next to his dad. "I shouted 'hei, hei'," he said -- and got so shocked and angry seeing the men threatening his dad that he cracked through the window with an arm, said the Grade ten pupil at the Jansen Afrikaans High School. He required stitches to his arm and surgery to his leg. Meanwhile mom Magda, still in her nightclothes, pushed the emergency button to their private security service, grabbed a baseball bat and stormed outside, ready to fight anybody. She saw her husband getting shot in his chest and watched her son bash one of the gunmen over the head with the baseball bat and then struggle with the man. "As I bent down I heard the shot go off,' she said. The bullet struck her husband in the chest and part of his lung was removed in surgery afterwards, she said. Then neighbours rushed in to help - just as the gunman fighting with her son fired a shot through her son's upper right leg. "Fortunately it was just a flesh-wound,' she said. The neighbours started chasing the gunmen - and both were captured and brought back to the crime scene to await the arrival of the police. Meanwhile passersby Annatjie Botes, her husband Riaan, en her brother-in-law Lourens also stopped at the scene - and Mrs Botes stopped Dylan's leg from bleeding out. "She saved my life,' said the Afrikaner youngster. "It was painful but she stopped the bleeding.' The entire neighbourhood has rushed to their aid: a local law firm even contacted them offering to pay for a new window. "People have been wonderful. I don't know how to say thank you.' said the mom. "But I will never sleep in my nightclothes again, I want to be ready...'
