Update Feb 18 2014: Man murdered near Hazyview identified - reporter: Nicolene Smalman 18 February 2014 06:03 HAZYVIEW – Another murder took place at a nearby guest establishment on Friday. This town has been making headlines for years as the area is under constant attack by armed robbers. -- Mr Johannes 'Boetie' Cornelissen (31) was declared dead at the Ant & Elephant lodge cottage he had been renting for the past few months. SAPS provincial police spokesman Sgt Gerald Sidebe said "police were informed about a shooting at the establishment at about 21:40. We arrived there and found Mr. Cornelissen in a pool of blood.” The victim, who apparently hailed from Upington, had been shot in the chest. Sedibe added that it was alleged that two black men who were armed, had entered Ant & Elephant "with the intention of robbing people". (it's not certain how Mr Sedibe could have known that since no-one was arrested). He added: They couldn’t establish at this stage whether anything had been stolen.
Mr Etienne Soine, acting chairman of the Hazyview Tourism Association, said the organisation had called on two local MECs - the one for community safety, security and liaison (Mr Vusi Shongwe) and the MEC for economic development, environment and tourism (Ms Pinky Phosa), to help decrease the high crime prevalence in the area.
“Phosa reacted and said she would call a meeting, but this hadn’t happened yet. We will continue to request increased policing in the area.”
Soine also called on lodge owners "to take responsibility for their own safety and that of their guests: " A lot of these establishments have easy access from the Sabie River side and lodge owners must beef up their security wherever possible.”

Mr Cornelissen went out the front door and was shot in the chest when he confronted the robber. SAPS confirmed investigation.

HAZYVIEW – A Hazyview resident was murdered at Ant & Elephant last night.
The establishment is situated seven kilometres from Hazyview. According to preliminary reports, two attackers of which one was armed, shot the man through his chest at about 21:30. Paramedics arrived at the scene soon after, but the man was declared dead.
Sabie Valley Security Forum searched for the suspects who had fled the scene. The search continued until 04:30 this morning, with no success.
The man’s particulars are unknown at this stage. Police were only willing to confirm that they had opened a murder docket.
