Two black men who put an Afrikaner couple through four hours of excruciating torture on their Bainsvlei smallholding were sentenced to long prison sentences in the Free State high court on Feb 14, 2014.
"I hope they die in prison,' said victim Elsa Kolver (55). She lost her right-eye after it was deliberately crushed in its socket by a gun-barrel during her torture ordeal in their smallholding on 18 (14?) January last year.
Her husband Pieter still has wiring in his knees which has to be removed - the knee still hasn't grown back after its bones were crushed when he was shot in the leg during the torture, he said. Judge S. Ebrahim said the two attackers, Attie Molawa (30) and Tabi Taaibosch, 42, applied horrific and very deliberate torture on the Afrikaner couple.. "They were greedy and used all the violence just to get hold of the safe,' said Ebrahim.
He pointed out that Elsa's upper jaw was broken alas were all her teeth -- crushed in her mouth while she had been brutally beaten. "Pieter was asleep and thus no threat to anyone, "the judge pointed out -- yet the thugs shot his right-knee cap to smithereens and crushed his right ankle with a tyre-iron. He has also suffered hearing loss from all the blows raining down on his skull and ears - and which caused swelling of his brain.
The atttackers even used a pitchfork during the attack. "The quality of life for the Kolver couple deteriorated badly", said the judge.
Taaibosch also was sentenced for breaking and entering the home of Hugh Martman at Oldsweg, Spitskop on 16 January 2013. The Kolvers lost goods valued at R148,699 -including two revolvers, ammo, R130,000 in cash, 360 British pounds, a safe, bank-cards and a cellphone. Adv Johan Roothman was the public prosecutor. Adv.
