Honeydew granny's finger bitten off by two cruel black male attackers: Mrs Daphne Dando, 78 was watching TV

15 January 2014 - A 78-year-old woman lost a finger after a robber bit it off on 12 January. ''The one 'burglar' was holding her from behind and had his hand over her mouth while he told the other man, 'do it'. The other man then started to bite her middle finger off to get to her two rings.''
Daphne Dando from Sundowner had just finished watching Carte Blanche when two men appeared in her garden cottage next to her daughter Janine's house.
Dando's other daughter Michele Dando said the thieves were after her mother's rings. ''I cannot believe how barbaric it was. But it happened very fast, because within 40 minutes I had her at the Netcare Olivedale Hospital.''
According to Michele, doctors were unable to re-attach her mother's finger. ''The one burglar was holding her from behind and had his hand over her mouth while he told the other man, 'do it'. The other man then started to bite her middle finger off to get to her two rings.''
Michele's sister Janine saw the men in the cottage and immediately pushed the panic button. ''They ran away. They got over the fence again. The fact that it was electrified did not stop them. The one man put my mother's finger in his pocket and ran off," Michele explained. ]
"The two men ran in different directions. Later on the man threw the finger in the street. My niece [Janine's daughter] hasdrecently taught her dog to sniff and he retrieved the finger."
Mrs Dando was still in hospital at the time of going to print. "My mother is handling it well. She is just worried as to how she is going to play tennis now. She struggled to sign her signature without her finger. I really want to warn all old ladies not to wear their rings anymore. My mother always turned her rings around on her finger when she was at the shops.''
On 13 December Dando's cottage was broken into while she was out. ''She quickly went out because she ran out of milk. So she was not home," Michele recounted. "They then stole her iPad and some other belongings.
During this burglary on 13 January they stole her new iPad.'' Janine believes the two crimes are linked. "Shortly after the first break-in we received a strange call from someone called Favour. He said he was in possession of the stolen goods and wanted us to meet him at Fourways Crossing. We went there, but Favour was a no-show. I believe this person might have information about the second robbery," Janine said.
Michele added this case should not be closed, "Such barbarians cannot go unpunished." The incident has been reported to the Honeydew Police Station
