SAPS: elderly grape/tomato farmer André van Rooyen, 70, attacked in bathroom by three black males near farm Pietmof, 30km from Upongton, Sat. Dec 23 2013: Reported by Charné Kemp: Upington farmer André van Rooyen, 70, is in the intensive care unit of the Mediclinic after he was ambushed by three black males in his bathroom at 20h45 on his grape/tomato farm Pietmof along the N14 route to Upongton. Three elderly Afrikaners were alone at the homestead during the attack: André van Rooyen (70) wife Betsie (66), and her mother Carolina Geldenhuys (88). The injured farmer's son-in-law Izak Lange said the three threatened the farmer with knives and while he tried to stop them he was stabbed in the left wrist. The thugs then fled through the adjacent bedroom and took a leap from the second-floor balcony. Mrs Van Rooyen called her son-in-law asking him to phone the ambulance and the police. Lange said he did and also called his brother-in-law Jacques Gerber, who is married to the couple's daughter Annerie, who rushed to help. Lange said the doctors struggled to stop the arterial bleeding from the farmer's wrist. "He is still in the intensive care unit and suffers from extreme blood-loss but he's stable'.
Meanwhile local farmers formed a search party with the SAPS dog-unit and caught the knifeman who they suspect of doing the stabbing, along the road: questioned him and he admitted to his involvement. The SAPS also are hot on the trail of the other two, said Lange, who lives in Upington but farms with his father-in-law. "They will return to the farm. He is very strong and is unafraid. He was born and raised on that farm. Nobody in the country is safe any longer. We will just have to accept this as a fact,' he commented.
SAPS lt Donald Mdhuli said the 'robbers' stole a handbag of unspecified contents and the key to the safe. The thirty-year-old arrested knifeman is in the police cells. Enquiries at , SAPS 053-337-3480. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Boere-Krisis-Aksie-BKA/116298045063416?fref=ts
