Nov 26 2013 - East London: 84-year-old Ivan Angelbeck fled his Derosa Farmhouse barefoot, bleeding heavily from a headwound: after two men had broken into his home and attacked him with a machete. Angelbeck - who is the father of the DA-councillor in Gonubie, Roy Angelbeck, and granddad of Great Kei municipality DA-councillor Sharne Jacobs --said he was asleep in his bedroom on Friday night. East London police said yesterday they were (*only) investigating a case of housebreaking and theft in relation to the incident but 'a charge of assault may also be laid once suspects have been arrested," said SAPS lt-col Mtati Tana.
Sniffer dogs were brought to the scene. " However, police were following up on strong leads", he added.
Tana said Mr Angelbeck reported that his attackers stole minor items: a DVD player, a cellphone, groceries from his fridge. Angelbeck said the men gained entry through a spare room window. “I had fallen asleep with the TV on and when they disconnected the DVD player the TV made a noise and I woke up.” He walked into his living room and saw two (*black) men, one tall and one short. One carried a panga (a machete). He screamed at them to get out. “The short guy was carrying a panga used it to knock me on my head.
“When I collapsed to the floor he continued to assault me. I can’t remember how long I was unconscious but eventually I came to and fled, leaving them behind,” he said, adding that he had run about 300m to Roy’s house to call for help.
