Pretoria North -- RekordMoot: "Area patrol member, Twanietta van Zyl, showed her bravery and her love for the community when she caught a hijacker in Pretoria West on Friday afternoon. Van Zyl was at home in her third-floor apartment when she heard screaming. She looked outside in the front and saw nothing, but when she looked at the back, she saw security guards screaming. “I walked downstairs and saw two guys who had come onto our premises. They were walking casually when I saw them at the corner,” Van Zyl explained.She told Rekord that her daughter had brought her her sector radio and that she called for backup before she started chasing after the men with her handgun.“The men started jogging after they noticed that I was chasing them, then they started running fast. The vehicles in the street broke their speed and I managed to catch up with them.”Van Zyl said that the men outsmarted her when she told them to lie down or she would shoot them. When they pretended to lie down, she approached them slowly and they got up and ran in different directions. When the hijackers split up, Van Zyl ran after the one of them, managing to trip him and sit on him. The man told her to get off of him since he was not a criminal.
“I was so tired when I caught the one guy. I thank the woman who puts our calls through, as she was with me all the way,” Van Zyl said .It is alleged that the men had robbed a pharmacy and hijacked a vehicle in the area, which ended up in an accident in WF Nkomo Street (former Church Street).
“After causing an accident, the men fled the scene and jumped over the wall of our premises to get away. The men robbed a pharmacy money, took two cell phones and hijacked a vehicle,” Van Zyl explained.
Van Zyl said that she only realised afterwards that she was alone and barefooted when she took on the hijackers, and that the men could have hurt her. She said she was proud to have caught a criminal single-handed. “I have never run barefoot after someone like that'.
