Afrikaner singer Sunette Bridges raisomg funds to help the 300 poor-white people at the Afrikaner Kays caravan park settlement in Strand West Cape -- after a fourth flood washed away their belongings once again http://www.censorbugbear.org/farmitracker/reports/view/1871 However -- she not only wants to get them back on their feet, but also wants to consult water-management experts to rebuild the homes so that they won't get flooded again, she said. Her long-term plans are to buy a farm and set up a self-sustaining kibbutz farm for poor Afrikaner families. "We have no intention of maintaining people in squatter camps: we want to get them out of there,' she said. Donate to: BOERVROULIGA First National Bank Current Account: 62379723995 Branch: Woodlands EFT Code: 250655 Swift Code: FIRNZAJJ Ref: KAYS Donations can also be made very easily via Paypal: http://www.boervrouliga.co.za/donations/ ---------- THE NEED IS GREAT: EIGHTY FAMILY COTTAGES WERE BADLY DAMAGED: "The need is great and public has already contributed by donating clothes and food. There's still a large shortage of furniture, refrigerators, ovens and beds,' she told Maroela Media, the publication for Solidarity trade union. About 80 of the wooden cottages housing most residents were damaged and the 300 residents' belongings washed away by the flooding river. Many of these cottages are built at the edge of the 20-year flood line - poor, homeless whites usually find such marginal land-sites to survive on. The residents have struggled to turn the squatter park into a liveable environment again and many meanwhile have to sleep in cars or have been put up with friends and families. The Boer Women's League visitors were greeted by a scene of devastation: dirty mats and belongings, mud and flotsam heaped high. Sunette told them she'd flown from Pretoria to visit them and to see what you're going through. And look at this, it looks so grubby,' she said, visibly moved. Solidarty Helping Hand charity in the West Cape provide the residents with food while they are getting back on their feet again. About 15 youth volunteers from the Helderberg Family Fellowship are at the site each day since the flood to help residents clean up and general odd jobs. The Boer Women's League will try and raise enough funds to replace their ovens and refrigerators. Resident Alet John said : 'things happened so quickly. I was at Kay's Kafee and when I looked out, I saw my flip-flops I'd left at the door, float past me in the street. "We had to grab what we could and flee our homes,' she said. "This is our fourth flood but it's the first time it arrived this fast'. She's lived there for twelve years. Sunette said as a temporary measure they want to rebuild the homes which suffered the largest amount of damage. "However we first want to consult with experts to make certain that a next flood won't inflict the same damage again.' She organized a barbeque for the residents so that she could have in-depth chats with them about their circumstances. She urged them to provide a sustainable contribution to the community and not rely on hand-outs. She encouraged them to pay their rent so that the owner could afford to maintain the squatter-park site. She has more extensive plans. The Boer Women's League is planning to buy a farm to set up a kibbutz system - where people who want to live there will be expected to help raise vegetables, fruit and other farming-initiatives. The proceeds from such farming-products can be used to on the one hand, feed the community, but also generate an income for them. "We have no intention of maintaining people in squatter camps - but to get them out of there', she said.
