Elise du Preez 95, died a suspicious death in George: SAPS asked to open murder-docket after claiming she died from 'natural causes'...
Nov 21 2013 - Journalist reporting: Pauline Lourens, George Herald: "The George Police have been asked to open a murder docket into the death of Elise du Preez who died two weeks ago at the age of 94.
Friends, who found an injured du Preez on 13 October at her Woodfield Village town house under puzzling circumstances, believe she died as a result of injuries sustained during a violent attack.
Well-known George private investigator, Michael Hills, who was approached to look into the matter, said this week that there were quite a few peculiarities at the scene. "There is no way that she could have lifted that heavy bed onto her own head, or even have fallen in such a way for this to have happened. It is unlikely that this is a natural death. It would be most revealing, however, to see the coroner's autopsy report."
Lienie Nel, who found Elise lying in this unnatural state, called in Hills' help last week. The extent of the injuries sustained by Elise, with indications of trauma on both sides of her head, and her complaining of an extremely sore throat and pain on the back of her head, caused Nel to suspect that an attacker had tried to throttle her after clubbing her from behind. "The fact that the bed was on her head indicates that she was attacked. She had broken cheek bones and other severe injuries including a broken elbow, and the George Hospital doctors treated her for a brain haemorrhage," said Nel on Friday during an inspection of Elise's home by Hills.
The police dismissed her death as "being from natural causes" and stated "no foul play is suspected." During discussions between Nel and the detectives on the case, they maintain there had been no forced entry into her home. While in the George Hospital, Du Preez, who was lucid, but unable to give details of what had happened, told her friend Lienie she had gone to fetch the carpets from the washing line. She repeatedly complained she had felt pain on the back of her head and had wanted to know what progress the police were making in their investigation.
Nel was dismissive of the police's theory of 'a simple fall' being responsible for such extensive injuries and is convinced that there is possible trauma on both sides of her head.
Police detectives fine-combed her home for fingerprints and a few days later brought sniffer dogs who became quite agitated and jumped onto Elise's bed.
On Friday, Hills listened to all the details presented by Du Preez's friends, who feel there is a possibility that someone had known her movements and could easily have penetrated her property, which was not all that well protected.
Nel last week applied for a copy of the coroner's report and was promised she would be given one.
