SAPS fires on 1,000 angry black protestors in Protea, Soweto: "Protest fury! Who is to blame for this Mr President? Today, SA largest daily The Daily Sun publishes disturbing pictures of angry people in confrontation with cops. They are people who are fed up with being lied to about basic services that never materialise. Their only recourse is to protest.
However, if President Jacob Zuma had his way, we would not be publishing them at all!In Mr Zuma's world we need more "patriotic reporting" of the kind he says is practised in Mexico and less "negative" reporting - in other words, a world where the government's inconvenient truths are brushed under the carpet.A report released yesterday by Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane revealed that 80% of government departments do not comply with service delivery requirements.
The report, which measures the state of public sector management practices over the past year, said the findings were “an anomaly, given that improving service delivery is a priority of the government”.
The findings revealed that 28 out of 42 government departments were red-flagged as non-compliant with minimum legal requirements for their areas.
"Don't blame the government for failing in 80% of its service delivery promises - blame the media for reporting it?
Zuma's ministers complain constantly and he accused the media of "not being elected". Well, neither the SA Communist Party nor Cosatu was elected, yet they have a habit of telling the ANC exactly what to do.
Mr Zuma was reported to have told students the media was so negative he sometimes felt like fleeing the country!
Sept 12 2013: Protea Glen, Soweto, South Africa: cops fire on more than 1,000 protesters against the total lack of sanitation at Waterworks Squatter Camp.
The deprived citizens of Protea Glen might wish he would do just that.
More than 1,000 protesters complaining of a lack of sanitation and housing gathered before dawn at Waterworks Squatter Camp in Protea Glen, Soweto.
As police arrived, all hell broke loose as rubber bullets and rocks started flying. The protesters had gathered to burn tyres and block the N12 freeway from Potchefstroom, Randfontein and Impala Road, west of Joburg.
“We’ve had enough!” resident Kholiwe Masala said.“This place is a health hazard to us. We don’t have running water and we don’t have proper toilets.”
She said they have to relieve themselves in the bushes. This place belongs to somebody else but I need a place of my own. I am tired of living in a shack,” she said.
Maria Kgaratsi, who has been living in the area for 15 years, said she is tired of living by candle light or buying expensive paraffin. “I want electricity. I am a loyal citizen of this country and I participate in elections but nothing ever happens for me,” she said.
“I’m not working and I have four children. We all live in a small shack. What do these people expect us to do?”
The residents also complained about their toilet drainage system because the smell is unbearable.
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said by the time calm was restored to the kasi they had arrested more than 200 people.“A journalist was injured on the scene. The suspects will be detained at the Westonaria cop shop and some at Protea Glen cop shop,” he said.
“Police are monitoring the situation and the roads are operating again.”
