---------------
Theresa Hammond was trying to protect two guests against an eight-member black male attack gang when she was shot in the arm.
One attacker shouted triumphantly: "I shot the bitch.' Mrs Hammond and her children Michelle 13 and son Leslie 5, were asleep on the second-floor of their home at the Ekandustria smallholdings in Bronkhorstspruit.
Mike, her husband, was in Wilgers Hospital in Pretoria, being treated for pneumonia.
Her guests, Derick and Michelle Lidston, were asleep on the ground floor of the house in Ferrus Street. Mrs Hammonds said she woke up at 03h30am with a gunbarrel against her head.
She was surrounded by a large group of black males: one of whom was her employer.
They asked all the old questions: 'where's the safe, where's the money'. She said they don't have a safe and no cash in the house.
The eight men then dragged her children from their beds and brought them to her while others searched the rest of the house. She didn't tell them there were guests, as managed to release herself from the grip of her assaillant to run to the guest room.
She and the guests shoved a clothes-closet in front of their bedroom door. "I told Derick to break the window and climb out to fetch help.'
The gang broke down the door and shot her through the closet: hitting her in the arm. He shouted triumphantly: "I shot the bitch'.
Meanwhile outside, Derick's attempt to seek help was aborted: one of the gangsters was outside and assaulted him so badly that he required surgery at the Pretoria East Hospital.
The gang looted the family's and guests' cellphones and other trinkets and eventually fled around 02h15.
The SAPS arrested Mrs Hammond's employer.
