Pilots fear for their safety: armed gangs attack Eric Maasdorp at Witbank airport
Pilots fear for their safety at the airfield, after a flight instructor and a student were held up and later on the same day another pilot was shot.
24 July 2013 By Samantha Traill The first incident happened early on Friday morning, July 19. Mr Eric Maasdorp, one of the flight instructors at Witbank Aeronautical Association, opened the main club hangar to drop off some paper work. On his way out of the hangar he met a student pilot.
Maasdorp and the student were approached by two unknown men. One of the men had a firearm and pointed the gun at them. “We were told to lie down and tied up,” said Maasdorp.
The suspects took taking various items out of the hangar.Once they took what they wanted, they left and Maasdorp and the student managed to untie themselves. A case of business robbery was opened.
Later in the afternoon, the suspects returned to Witbank Airfield. where shots were fired and a pilot was injured.
