No fewer than 32 people have been found dead after going missing since the beginning of the year.
Most of them were women, said the Pinks Ladies organisation, which focuses on finding missing people.
Director Dessie Rechner said women reported missing were mostly between 16 and 35 years old.
-- In Pretoria West, 16-year-old Natasha van der Berg was still missing after she was last seen in Pretoria West on 4 April around 12:00.
Rechner said a lead on her whereabouts was recently received, which was being followed up by police.
She said theteenager told her parents she was going shopping but never returned. Van der Berg was wearing black tights and a white jacket with a silver necklace at the time she went missing.
Anyone with information on her could contact Warrant Officer Killian at the Pretoria West police station on 012-327-5845/4907 or Pink Ladies on 072-214-7439.
In Gauteng alone, three women had been found dead after they disappeared.
-- In Pretoria, the first one was 27-year-old Maropeng Mohosane from Lyttelton who went missing on 18 March.
- About two weeks ago, Ditumisho Khumalo Makgathulela’s body was found in a veld in Ga-Rankuwa.
- Ditumisho disappeared from her home in Pretoria West last month, said Rechner. She was last seen in the afternoon of 7 March. She was buried last Saturday.
Some tips from Pink Ladies:
— If someone attacks you from the back, use your elbow to hit him in the stomach.
— If a robber asks for your wallet or purse, do not hand it to him just toss it away from you.
— If you are ver thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving. The driver won’t see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
— Lock the doors and drive off as soon as you get into your vehicle.
— If someone has been hiding inside your car and put a gun to your head, crash into something and run for safety. This is better than having your body found in a remote location.
— When entering your vehicle, check it inside thoroughly.
— When parked next to a van, enter the vehicle from the passenger side. If a man is sitting alone in the seat nearest your vehicle, you may want to get someone to walk you to your vehicle.
— Always take the elevator instead of the stairs. Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot.
— If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, always run. The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times, and most likely not in a vital organ. Run, preferably in a zig-zag
pattern.
— When you hear a crying baby outside your window or door, ignore it and call the police.
— If you hear all your taps outside running or what you think is a burst pipe, do not go outside to investigate. Criminals turn on the taps so you would go outside to be attacked.
Rather be safe than sorry and rather be paranoid than dead, said Rechner.
