Father fights for life following hit-and-run
Due to all the activity, no one was able to get the perpetrator’s number plate
The distraught wife of a 43-year-old Stanmore father is frightened that she might be left widowed after her husband was critically injured in a hit and run on Grove End Drive, over the weekend.
Leon Chetty, a manager based in NMR Avenue, is currently in ICU at the Nu-Shifa Hospital, fighting for his life after he was allegedly knocked down by a hit and run driver who did not even stop to check if he was okay. This is a case where the police will be investigating attempted culpible homcide. And if Mr Chetty dies, the driver will be charged with culpible homicide.
Chetty’s wife, Ronel (40) spoke to the Phoenix Sun Newspaper, sharing the details of the nightmare that her family has had to endure these past few days. “I’m afraid if he does not pull through, I will be left widowed with no one to lean on and raise our child with,” she said.
Ronel said that earlier on the day of incident, her husband had gone to the shop to buy a few items. A function had been taking place at a hall close by and there was a frenzy of activity around. She said that her husband had then attempted to cross the road, when a speeding car slammed into him.
Emergency services were called and immediately rushed the injured man to hospital. Ronel said that her husband had sustained a number of injuries including a broken left leg, a head injury and various bruises on his body. He also lost a few teeth as a result of the impact.
Due to all the activity, no one was able to get the perpetrator’s number plate. The family is thereby appealing to members of the public who may have witnessed the incident and have information relating thereof to contact the police on 031 508-2300.
