Black mobs attack whites and black foreign traders in downdown Cape Town -
Hundreds of members of Ses'Khona, known as the "poo protesters", marched to the Western Cape legislature chanting 'we are hungry, we want houses'.
Ses'Khona leader Andile Lili was heard to uyrge the crowd to 'mobilise in townships and return to the city centre of Cape Town with 300,000 people."
In St George's Mall, The Times photographer Esa Alexander was present and taking pictures when a white man who had just coffee was caught up in the violence.
He was assaulted by a large black man in a yellow tshirt - and, said Alexander: this attacker was part of the protest: 'When the protesters came, the (white) man with the coffee tried to run away.
"They got hold of him and pulled at his bag," he said. "The (white) man fought back and when one of the attackers pulled his bag out of his hand the (white) victim fell to the ground.
"The (black) thief ran into the crowd before the (white) guy could get back up. It was chaos."
The (black mob) protesters attacked the stalls of 'informal traders' - often these traders are black Africans from other parts of Africa who have fled to South Africa.
It was reported by other news media that most of the traders had locked down their stalls. However the stalls were vandalised and the mob broke iron rods from the stalls with which they
attacked 'bystanders'. The police arrived and the mob dispersed.
Only one man was arrested for 'possession of stolen goods from a vendor', siad SAPS Captain FC van Wyk.
