On March 6 2014, Angelique Myburgh and her family survived a horrific attack by a black male gang at their Silkaatsnek home near Brits and Hartbeespoort. In January 2014, the local ANC premier Thandi Modise made it very clear that whites were not exactly welcome in the Brits area; blaming white farmers in Brits in her statement trying to justify the deaths which occurred when police shot at rioters during water-shortages. In March 2013, eight farmers were murdered in the greater Brits area alone during the previous 8 months, warned Freedom Front Plus spokesman Pieter Groenewald. In October 2013, two farmers from the Boschkop area Douw de Beer and son Dylan, falsely accused of murdering illegal hunters Morssi Morua and Zacharia Leso, were found not guilt of murder but went into the crime-record for having 'stolen a cellphone'. White families on the numerous smallholdings around Brits report daily attacks by armed black male gangs which are never responded to by the local police, our records show. For the record let it be noted that the Brits area 's farmers were never rich: the region flourished after poor-white farm families were offered homesteading rights by the State during the 1920s to farm on small tobacco farms created to empower the entrepreneurial Rupert family. The farmers contracted their crops to the Rupert family''s tobacco empire. Some of the large open-air sheds built to dry their tobacco crops are still scattered around the area. These homesteaders diversified their crops after the tobacco industry started floundering due to the anti-smoking laws worldwide.
