Durban Police formed a guard of honour yesterday at the funeral of Durban Metro Constable Cherise Cox, 40.
Mrs Cox died at the weekend from injuries she sustained in 2003 when she was shot while apprehending hijacking suspects.
She had to undergo ,ore than 23 operations to ease blockages in her intestines caused by a hollow-point bullet.
At the Presbyterian Church in Umbilo yesterday, family, friends, and Cox's former colleagues in the metro police reflected on her 10-year ordeal with great sadness and with many tears.
When her brother, Shane, a former police officer, accepted the flag that covered his sister's coffin, he was inconsolable.
"I'm grateful that my sister's colleagues came in their numbers to pay their last respects.
"It's a very sad day for my family, but seeing so many members who worked with her in full uniform assists me in dealing with the sorrow," he said.
Metro Police Senior Superintendent Theunis van Heerden - who was Cox's commander when she was shot - fought back tears as he commended Cox for putting her life on the line to protect the public from criminals.
