Children not safe in South Africa: Annamarie van Greunen, 4, dumped next to busy hiway by car-jackers
Four-year-old Annamarie van Greunen was dumped next to the highway by armed car-jacker after car-jacking her aunt's car, with the little girl still in her kiddie-seat in the rear.
Report by Natalie Grobler 18 August 2014 Four-year-old Annamarie van Greunen was dumped next to the highway by one armed hijacker after three black males kidnapped the child and her aunt Annatjie Pretorius in Danville.
Thre three black gunmen chased away at high speed after grabbing Mrs Annatjie Pretorius' car at Uys Street and the corner of Knight-and Cloete Streets, in Danville. This was seen by a resident mr Rufus Engelbrecht., a member of Area Patrol.
"I was enroute home when I saw three men attack a woman and steal her car. I chased them but at that stage I was not aware that a white child was still
in the backseat.
Engelbrecht the hijackers were headed for Lotus township. When they saw they were chased two jumped from the car - and the driver then dumped
the little girl next to the road before driving the car into the veld and running away.
Engelbrecht said two of the thugs pointed their guns at him while he was chasing them but he kept going.
"We finally found the car in a veld in Westford. The thugs got away.'
Annamarie 's dad Hennie said he was overwhelmed by joy when he could take his little girl in his arms - unharmed.
"She said: " I missed papa. It was a terrible moment. I never want to go through such a day again.
It was wonderful that the Area Patrol members responded so quickly.
SAPS captain Lerate Ngomane confirmed the hijacking explaining that the three armed men had first pelted Mrs Pretorius' car with stones.
"When she stopped to find out what was going on, they pointed a firearm and hijacked her car. She begged them to take the child from the backseat and give her to her aunt, but
they ignored her pleas, said Ngomane. She added that the hijhackers were not arrested.
