August 25, 2014 Port Elizabeth journalist Allan Williams reports that the local police have opened an investigation after Port Elizabeth contractor Mike den Drijver, 58, was assaulted by a (*black) taxi driver in a road rage incident in Walmer on Friday.
Mike den Drijver, 58, said he was driving in his Hyundai H-100 bakkie on the Buffelsfontein Road heading towards Seaview, when a taxi driver tried to overtake him on the left-hand side.
“It was a two-way street and there was no space on my left side. I could also not risk driving towards oncoming traffic. I stayed in my lane and I think that is what angered him,” he said.
Den Drijver reached the traffic lights first, with the taxi behind him. “He got out of his car and charged at me like a bull. He started hitting me with fists on my face,” Den Drijver said.
“He said he was going to kill me. During the scuffle, I lost my spectacles and he went for the ignition, trying to grab my keys.”
He said the taxi driver then opened his car-door. “I was bleeding from the cut above my right eye. He tried squashing my foot with the door. People were just looking and no one bothered to come and help. PAGE GRAB FROM PE HERALD NEWSPAPER
