Pietermaritzburg SAPS w/o Vicus Leslie 'Savage' Botha, 63, (ret) dies from attack outside West Street home, reports The Witness journalist Mlondi Radebe - A WELL-KNOWN former member of the Pietermaritzburg police communications team died in hospital yesterday following medical complications after he was attacked outside the gate of his West Street home.
Warrant officer Vicus Leslie “Savage” Botha (63) was admitted to the Mediclinic on Saturday after the attack. His son, Craig Botha, told The Witness yesterday that his father had suffered medical complications and was in a coma and that he passed away 'peacefully this morning.' He was a good father who provided for his family and was always there for us. He took a keen interest in family activities,” said Craig. Ex SAPS spokesman for Pietermaritzburg, Colonel Henry Budhram, said Botha served with him in the SAPS from 1982 when he joined the police after arriving from Zimbabwe. He was remembered for having good people skills. “We worked with him at Alexandra Road police station. He also worked in various units in the police that included communications. He was a very efficient policeman, and a good person to work with. He resigned in 2011 and we used to meet up now and again,” said Budhram. The current SAPS spokesman Captain Laume van Jaarsveld said police are 'investigating an inquest docket'. (??) She confirmed that Botha was a respected police member. “He worked for many years in communications. He had a beautiful singing voice and played a guitar during police functions. He loved his music and work.” Botha leaves behind two sons, Craig and Mark, daughter Laura-Jane Geekie, and four grandchildren.
