Delmas - Botleng: ANC-mayor Eva Makhabane rescued from mob who said they wanted to 'hurt her'...
Feb 14 2014 - The SAPS riot-police members were rushed from across Mpumalanga province on Friday-morning . They cut lose with rubber-bullets against a large crowd of rioters.
The police were rushed in after ANC-mayor Eva Makhabane arrived at around 12h00 to speak to the grievances of the residents. Speaking in Sotho, she tried to calm them down - but the crowd was displeased with the results.
The SAPS, wearing bulletproof vests, held hands in a protective lineup around the mayor. The crowd pushed forward, threatening to hurt her and wanting to attack here.
The SAPS grabbed Mrs Makahabane and some of her councillors and pushed them into a waiting Njala armoured vehicle.
The next moment the SAPS started firing at the crowd with rubber bullets. They shattered, regrouped and started throwing gigantic boulders towards the SAPS from behind fences and from inside their homes.
Terrified women fled inside homes from the outside and hid in back yards, some were weeping. One of the women, crying as if her heart wanted to break, said the protest action was not meant to descend into violence.
"We are just looking for jobs, but nobody listens to us." The mayor and her councillors refused to speak to Beeld nor even give their names.
And while the streets suddenly were deserted the SAPS kept firing in all directions. The Delmas community is angered because they say the 13 local coal-mines around the town refused to give jobs to the locals.
They accuse the sonamed 'Victor Khanyelocal community council ' of nepotism and corruption. http://www.beeld.com
