Impoverished Pretoria North's indigenous Afrikaner residents wage an impressive battle against armed black home-invaders: fighting back with slingshots, flower pots, Nescafé coffee jars... ---- With violent crime soaring in the overcrowded Afrikaner Pretoria North suburbs, residents such as Herman Engelbrecht, beauty queen Corné Labuschagne and retired sergeant-major Lea Minnaar all used impromptu-weapons and fiercely fought back against armed black male attackers who had invaded them in their homes. Engelbrecht shot one attacker with a well-aimed ball-bearing from his slingshot; beauty queen Labuschagne zapped one of her 3 black male attackers with an electric rod and chased them off; and sgt-major Minnaar crashed a variety of pots and Nescafé coffee jars on one attacker's head to stop the home-invaders from injuring her elderly granddad. And while these three working-class Afrikaners all sustained non-lethal injuries, they and their loved ones also survived because they put up such a fierce defence. --- Look local journalist Ryno Ellis reported on 1 October 2013 that 'like the Biblical story of David and Goliath', Engelbrecht had put up an impressive slingshot-defence to try and stop three gunmen from attacking four kids - two of how own and two friends -- he'd taken camping and fishing at the Bon Accord Dam. He was shot in the hand: but he was so fiercely protective of the four kids that even with an injured hand, he still fired back with his slingshot - hitting one gunman. "I readied the slingshot and waited. One guy then shot me in the left hand, but I reloaded the slingshot and fired again - and am sure I shot and injured the guy because the next shot he fired, missed me completely," Engelbrecht was quoted as saying. While he fought to get the three blacks away from the tent in which the children were sleeping, the thugs did manage to reach the kids: threatening them with a gun and robbing inexpensive items. Engelbrecht's 13-year-old son had to shield his six-year-old sister, n her sleeping bag during the ordeal.' Afterwards, Engelbrecht reported, 'the children became are 'incredibly paranoic and too terrified to even go out in the street. http://www.looklocal.co.za/looklocal/content/en/pretoria-north/pretoria-north-news-general?oid=7824900&sn=Detail&pid=4980418&Man-weer-rowers-af-met-kettie- Local beauty queen Mrs Corné Labuschagne was attacked by three armed blacks on 23 September 2013 in her home - only a week before winning the Mrs CSN Gauteng 2013 contest held by the Role Models Foundation. She told journalist Ryno Ellis that she'd zapped one of the three armed blacks who had broken into her home with an electric prod. (23 Sept 2013) "I zapped the one guy and swung that electric rod around myself, prepared to fight the other two men who were threatening me. Instead they fled without stealing anything - but as they jumped into their bakkie one man had pointed his firearm at me, so I hid away and they left.' She sustained some bruises but remained otherwise unharmed. http://www.looklocal.co.za/looklocal/content/en/pretoria-north/pretoria-north-news-general?oid=7856494&sn=Detail&pid=4980414&Plaaslike-skoonheid-gekroon-kort-n%C3%A0-traumaties-aanval- http://www.looklocal.co.za/looklocal/content/en/pretoria-north/pretoria-north-news-general?oid=7808057&sn=Detail&pid=4980418&Skoonheidsprinses-dryf-rowers-met-skokstok-weg- ----------------- And retired SANDF sergeant-major Lea Minnaar, 56, got so angry when she was attacked at 20h45 on a Thursday-night in September 2013 by armed black gunmen while grabbing a smoke on her stoep, that she fought back with everything she could find: she broke a ceramic pot over an attacker's head, and fought back with a vase, a Nescafé coffee-jar and even her old dad's walking stick. Look local journalist Du Preez Martins reported her on her impressive battle on 16 September 2013. "For the robber, Minnaar's fiercely angry attack was just one too many and ducking away and shielding his head, he fled, trying to unlock the door,' Martins wrote. Lea Minnaar's mini-war erupted just as she had stepped outside her homestead at her Boekenhoutskloof smallholding to have a smoke on the stoep, when two gunmen stormed her out of nowhere. She fled inside with the men on her heels. A gunmen shoved her down and stormed towards her dad in the living room - but she locked the door to stop the second man from getting inside. "When I looked around, I saw the gunman pointing his gun at my dad's head. She saw red and grabbed the nearest thing, a small ceramic pot, stormed the gunman and beat him repeatedly over the head with it. The pot broke and the next weapon she grabbed was a Nescafé coffee-jar. "I bashed him with it until the blood ran while he was hitting me with the pistol-handle over my head. I got increasingly angry and wanted to kick him in his family jewels,' she said. The guy ducked and fled to the door, trying to unlock it - but then she chased him with her father's walking stick. Then she heard a shot being fired: it was her son Dirkie who'd rushed in to investigate the noise, ran into the gunmen, who pushed him down and fired a shot which missed - and a second shot went wild into the roof of the stoep. Minnaar's brother Eben who also lives there also stormed in with his .375 revolver. As the thugs were fleeing, they fired off three shots in the Minnaars' direction. Eben fired back: "just to scare them and to remind them that we are armed,' said Eben Minnaar. Lea Minnaar required treatment for her head-wounds. And she also was grateful that the paramedic held her hand for a while to help her get over the shock, she said. http://www.looklocal.co.za/looklocal/content/en/pretoria-north/pretoria-north-news-general?oid=7790062&sn=Detail&pid=4980418&Vrou-takel-rowers-met-blompot- Burglaries, armed robberies and car-jackings have escalated in Pretoria North: http://www.looklocal.co.za/looklocal/content/en/pretoria-north/pretoria-north-news-crime?oid=7836550&sn=Detail&pid=4980418&Burglaries--robberies-and-car-jackings-escalate-in-the-north
