The tiny Chrissiesmeer hamlet was shaken by the murder of local resident Mrs Alice Farinha on November 14 2013: the unnamed white murder-suspect is scheduled to appear on January 14 2014 in Ermelo magistrate's court for bail-application. ----------- One of the female relatives of the murdered lady wrote on her facebook page: "It drives me crazy, thinking how my grandmother must have begged this man to stop destroying her.My boyfriend had to go and identify her: I couldn't. He said he recognized her by the pink in her hair: her face was black and blue and swollen up the way he kicked and hit her.He broke all her ribs: her internal organs were damaged from the fierce blows and then he strangled her to death. My grandmother then was dragged to the bathroom where he washed her and put clean clothes on her. Then he dragged her to her bed and covered her up as if she was sleeping. He then lay down all night next to her... this man is well passed sick if you ask me.When my grandmother was found, he claimed she'd died 'because she drank pills'. And he was so stupid to believe that everybody would believe him because he washed her. This is the man who was pitied by my grandmother and who provided him with a roof over his head and food. He had also been seen in Secunda a long time earlier, and in Ermelo etc." DEMOGRAPHICS: Chrissiesmeer 's 4,012 residents only have 2.4% white English-speakers and 5.2% Afrikaans-speaking whites. A murder in Chrissiesmeer is almost unheard of: there was no-one murdered in 2012 and the town has averaged one murder a year for the past five years. Her relatives have been posting messages of grief and mourning on her facebook page ever since: and also posted the picture of the white suspect, demanding that he must not be allowed to get bail (attached). https://www.facebook.com/alice.farinha/about We are awaiting details of her murder from the SAPS. Background demographics: There are only 4,012 people in Chrissiesmeer living on 1,200/km2 (3,200/sq mi)of wetlands. The racial makeup in 2011 census was: Black African 94.0% (62.4% of total of 4,012 people speak Zulu 62.4% and 26.5% are foreign Swazis); White: 5.2% of whom are Afrikaans 4.5% and English speakers are 2.4% of the total pop), KhoiSan 0.1% (Afrikaans), Indian/Asian 0.7% (English) History: (Lake Chrissie) is a small town situated in Msukaligwa Local Municipality, in a wetland area of Mpumalanga province in South Africa, on the northern banks of the eponymous Lake Chrissie. The San inhabited this area along with the Tlou-tle people who lived on rafts in the larger lakes. The Voortrekkers established a town here in the 1860s and named it after Marthinus Wessel Pretorius's daughter Christina. In the 1880s the town became an important stopover for wagons travelling to the gold mining town of Barberton. In total there are more than 270 lakes in the immediate area (located not far from Carolina). Every year nearly 20.000 flamingo come into the area to breed. -------- While there undoubtedly is no link between this murder, the formerly very peaceful and harmonious hamlet of Chrissiesmeer - located amidst the hundreds of lakes in this pristine region - has lately been plunged into chaos with residents supporting or opposing the coal-mining plans of the ANC regime. The lines were drawn in the small town ever since a public hearing in March 2013, when unrest arose about the ANC-regime's plans for coal-mining. The hamlet is at the centre of South Africa's largest and most pristine lake district with 270 lakes and pans located within a 20 km radius of the village. Many tens of thousands of water-birds rely on the clean water for their survival. There also is a sizeable community of Khoi-San people still living here - who are South Africa's First Nation. Suddenly this peace was shattered at a public hearing in March 2013 - which was related to the proposed opencast coal-mining within the catchments of these pristine water-pans in the Mpumalanga Lake District by top ANC-official owned coal mines. These plans present a very severe threat to this unique and pristine wetland ecosystem, and the vast majority of farmers in the district have signed an agreement to support the plans for keeping the wetlands in its original pristine condition and supporting the BioDiversity plans for the region. However some black residents are being incited by ANC-linked officials to support the mining-plans with promises of lucrative jobs and lavish lifestyles. Various coal-mining 'companies' all linked to top ANC-officials are involved in spreading division and violence to force through the plans for coal-mining.
