The attack on January 1 2014 at the couple's smallholding in Suiderberg, West of Pretoria ended with Van Jaarsveld being operated on in hospital and his disabled wife telling the news media with a hoarse voice that he 'survived but is very weak. The bullet perforated his intestines and his bladder is also damaged'. She was hoarse because she screamed louder than she ever did in her life to alert the neighbours. When Wally stormed the gunmen he kicked the sliding glass door from its rails; Wally and the door fell on top of the gunmen and the men fled without 'robbing' anything. The attack occurred at 16h00 on January 1 2013 and more attackers had been waiting in a car outside. Two of the men walked into the Van Jaarsveld homestead pointing their guns and one immediately shot down Van Jaarsveld "My husband sort of leaned against the wall after he was shot. Then the gunman pointed his gun at me, and my husband said "Oh no, not my wife,' and he stormed them, she said. He landed on top of the men with the derailed glass door. "I couldn't see what happened outside and I was screaming like I have never screamed in my life before. The gunmen got so frightened that they jumped across a low wall and jumped into a car in which other gunmen were also waiting. The gang fled while the wife alerted the neighbours and paramedics from the Best Care ambulance service. Its spokesman Xander Loubser said they placed the injured smallholder on a spinal board and rushed him to Kalaphong hospital. Nella said that she was 'very grateful to be alive.'
