SA missionary-family survive slaughter at Kenya mall:
2013-09-21 Rapport Afrikaans weekly journalist Claudi Mailovich describes the terror of Afrikaner missionary family Jako, Karin and Maureece Hugo. Son Maureece, 13 was taken to celebrate his 13th birthday by watching the movie 'Planes' at the upmarket mall.
At least 39 people were murdered said Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta in the Westgate massacre by muslim terrorists and dozens injured.
The Hugo couple live in the village of Kisii six hours' drive away from Nairobi and had brought their son to Westgate to watch the movie "Planes".
"About half an hour into the movie the power went off and we heard shots,' he told Jakaranda FM radio from Nairobi.
"We hid for two to three hours inside the theatre beneath the seats. It was dark. The shooting would stop for ten minutes and we'd just get some hope then they started shooting again.
We prayed a lot. We are missionaries,' said Jake Hugo. Somali-speaking men wearing black clothes and bulletproof vests were shouting for all muslims to leave: 'we only want to kill non-muslims'.

told Rapport that 'he had never seen anything like as a war correspondent in Uganda, south Sudan and Somalia'.
"It was terrible, chaos.' Tiles were smeared with blood, spent cartridges were strewn across the shopping centre and windows were shattered, reported Reuters.
They reported a policeman 'dragging the body of a young girl across the floor and putting her on a branchard'.
Security guards also were pushing bodies and injured victims in shopping trollies outside.
A retired British soldier told Reuters: "I personally touched the eyes of four people who were dead: one was a child. It's a slaughter'.
