Bloemfontein magistrate's court: journalist: Pieter Steyn: Volksblad, Aug 22 2013: 26-year-old tattoo-artist Craigh Matthews, 26, was denied bail today; arrested for the violent attack against local Afrikaner woman Mrs Anna van der Walt. State prosecutor Shirene Ernest submits in court documents in Matthews' bail application -- which was denied -- that Matthews was a flight-risk as he had fled to Mafikeng in North West after attacking Mrs Van der Walt, and police-officers had to arrest him there and bring him back. Mathews in turn claimed that he was threatened in Grootvlei prison and told he was 'watched'. Magistrate Thamae postponed his case to 26 August after investigating police warrant officer Gerhard van Dyk testified that Anna van der Walt -- who knew her attacker - was misled by the accused asking her for a drink of water. She then was allegedly attacked by Matthews and two minor co-accused. He gave her an electric shock with a powerful cattle-prod, and then allegedly had repeatedly bashed her head against her tiled floors until she passed out. "It was the suspect, Matthews, who allegedly gave Mrs Van der Walt the electric shock. She was attacked in the early-morning after she had opened the door to them to give them the asked-for drinks of water. After she fell on the floor, he sat on her back, grabbed her by her ears and bashed her forehead against the floor until she passed out. The victim knew Matthews and that's why she had opened the door to him,' Van Dyk testified before magistrate M. Thamae. The suspects then fled in Mrs Van der Walt's old Opel Corsa. http://www.volksblad.com/nuus/2013-08-20-vrou-se-kop-glo-op-vloer-gekap
