The Brown family of a smallholding at Albert Wessels Drive, Newcastle already were destitute, but were still trying to survive from subsistance survival with some chickens on a meagre smallholding. Now they have nothing left at all to survive with after their home was burned down in a 'veld fire' which may - or may not - have been deliberately set.

17 August 2013 Reveshni Moodley The Brown family watched in anguish as their home, belongings and pets were destroyed in a raging fire this morning.
According to family member, Patrick, they had all been out visiting relatives when his father received the devastating news."We left home around 8am and everything was fine," Patrick said. "Someone from Raphah phoned my dad to say they could see the flames, and we sped through every red robot trying to get back home."Patrick said the family has lost their life's possessions, and are now left with nothing but the clothes on their backs. They rushed about and managed to save some of their precious chickens.
"All my school uniforms, books, clothes... Everything is gone," he sobbed. Officials at the scene "could not confirm the cause of the blaze". Firefighters struggled to contain the inferno, with more trucks arriving on scene within minutes of each other.According to a report from South African Community Crime Watch, the house appeared to have been caught in a veld fire, which has razed the area.One of the dogs caught in the fire was fortunate to have rescued, and a community member has offered to house the family tonight.
At this time, community members are still rescuing livestock and salvaging what they can from the wreckage.
