White Van Riebeeck Park man survives attempt to strangle him: son stabs black male attacker who is arrested in veld by MML Security
16 August 2013 Birch Acres, Van Riebeeck Park: Roux van der Merwe writes: A fleeing burglar got more than what he bargained for on Friday afternoon when he was stabbed in the neck in another house where he tried to hide.The man was trapped in the bathroom and tried to strangle the owner. However, his son heard the noise, grabbed a knife and stabbed the suspect who tried to strangle his father.
The incident occurred in Van Riebeeck Park around 12.30pm. According to Const André Jansen of the SA Airforce, he found the suspect in his own garden. The man pretended to be a gardener, but seeing that it was Jansen's house, he knew the man was lying and he chased him.The fleeing suspect jumped over walls from home to home until he finally got to the house where he tried to strangle the man.The man, who wished to remain anonymous, said he was hanging washing on the line. In the short time he went from the bathroom to the washing line, the suspect must have ran into the bathroom. When he returned, the suspect started to strangle him. He managed to make a noise which his heard. He said his son came into the bathroom and stabbed the suspect.The wounded burglar ran outside into a veld on the corner of De wiekus Road and Soutpansberg Drive. According to the man, just before he was held up in the batroom, he saw another man running through the yard, jumping over the wall and getting into a taxi.He said he checked the fence before returning to his washing in the bathroom where he was attacked by the hiding man.It is believed an unknown number of suspects broke into a house in the area but the house's alarm went off.
Some of the black men fled in a green Sentra and were chased by MML Security to the circle on Kwartel Road in Birch Acres. MML lost the suspects when they went onto the R25.
When they returned to the area of the incident they found the bleeding suspect in the veld. MML security officers Ryno Opperman and Philip Kilian apprehended the man and called for an ambulance. They found a gold watch in the suspect's possession and on inspection of the veld also a Play Station 3 wrapped in a sweater.
