Heart patient Ria Saayman 73 assaulted by black nurse, Joburg academic hospital, who snarled "I will kill you'. 12 August 2013 - Heart patient Ria Saayman 73 assaulted by black nursing-sister in Johannesburg academic hospital who snarled "I will kill you'... Mr Johan Saayman says his wife Ria, 73, was admitted to the Academic Hospital in Johannesburg for treatment of a heart attack. She was admitted to a ward. He said 'she struggles with her eye sight and has a series of ailments'. He brought her a small radio to listen to. 'A nurse came to my wife and ordered her to turn off the radio. Ria meanwhile was trying to draw the (black) nurse's attention to a patient next to her whose television was turned on to full blast, and asked 'how people can complain about her little radio with that noise going on elsewhere'. The nurse then turned off the ward lights and my wife, who struggles with her eyesight, got up to go into the corridor where the lights were still on so that she can look for my telephone number link on her cellphone.' She wanted to phone me about the incident. "The nurse then stormed at Ria from behind, grabbed her around the neck, strangled her and shoved her roughly while saying 'I will kill you', repeatedly. Shortly thereafter his wife was discharged from hospital. Johan now fears for his wife's life at that hospital: she relies on it for her medical follow-ups, he said. DA-councillor Elmarie Linde demands an urgent investigation at the hospital after the allegations. Two doctors who examined Ria Saayman afterwards, confirmed that she had bruises on one arm and her neck indicating that she had been assaulted. "If these allegations are true, it is worrying to justify such treatment by hospital personnel,' said Linde. Hospital workers must maintain a high level of pride in their work and work-ethics, to respect patient and provide them with care and sympathy.' And families must feel that they can, without fear, leave their loved oned in the care of qualified hospital personnel. However such aleged behaviour is unacceptable. "Only an internal investigation can establish exactly what happened in that dark ward that night.' Linde says she has had other indications that the same nurse was allegedly involved in similar incidents before, and has written the hospital manager Dr Kenoshi, asking for an investigation. By the time of going to print, the newspaper who wrote the article was unable to get a response from hospital management.
