Andries Grebe, arrested for nothing at all, dies in Mountain Rise police cell. Family wants answers: "THE family of a disabled diabetic man who died in the cells in Mountain Rise police station last weekend are desperate for answers to questions they have about his death. According to his brother, Dawie, Andries Grebe (37) was arrested on Saturday morning in Alexandra Road for a damage-to-property case after he was ' allegedly drunk ' on Friday night. ------------------------ (*NOTE: People suffering a diabetic attack often appear drunk to medically-untrained people. Persons with a diabetic attack often also say nonsensical things and often have blurred speech, and often shout aggressively. They don't know they are doing it). ----------------- He was "discovered dead" when police checked the cells on Sunday morning. The family have been given no cause of death. “We have a hundred questions, but no one can give us answers,” said his uncle Wayne Hardouin. Dawie arrived at the Mountain Rise police cells on Sunday morning to visit his brother, with a packet of food. He was told to wait and after some time was taken into a room with a police captain, who told him his brother was dead. “He left me to cry and walked out, and I got up and left.” Dawie said the police were aware his brother, who had lost a leg to diabetes, was diabetic. He said police were told this by a woman at the scene when he was arrested and that the family had called the police station to tell the police that he needed specific insulin. He wants to know if his brother was given the correct insulin in the cells, and by whom. HOW DO THE POLICE KNOW HE WAS DRUNK AND NOT SUFFERING FROM THE EFFECTS OF INCORRECT BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS? Hardouin said: “How do [the police] know he was drunk and not suffering from the effects of incorrect blood sugar?” Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane yesterday said that Grebe was arrested on Saturday for "malicious damage to property. He was then taken to SAPS Mountain Rise for detention. During his detention, " the deceased did not report any illnesses nor did he ask for any medication". Police are still awaiting a toxicology report to determine the exact cause of death. The circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated,” Zwane said. Zwane did not specify 'what property' was 'maliciously damaged'. Attempts to get comment from the Independent Police Directorate yesterday were unsuccessful.http://www.iol.co.za/news/crime-courts/.
