The assault on April 5 2013 at a Caltex garage in Smithfield was recorded on CCTV footage and eNCA.com exclusively revealed the details shortly thereafter. ------- (See the video recording on: http://www.enca.com/south-africa/smithfield-cop-fired-assault-woman) ------------------ Warrant officer Ernest Maratshane, who was stationed at Smithfield SAPS, can be seen on the video hitting the unidentified woman and later kicking her in the head. He was not in police uniform. After Maratshane begins assaulting the woman, two policemen pull him away but do not restrain or arrest him. They move him away from the woman but Maratshane is still able to walk back to her and kick her when she falls to the ground. The two police officers do not offer any assistance to the woman. Watch the shocking footage of the assault in the gallery above. Maratshane has now been fired from the SAPS after a provincial disciplinary hearing that ended last week. He was suspended for two months before the hearings without pay and his firearm taken away. Maratshane, who was apparently hoping to retire in a few months before the law caught up with him, has also had his retirement package taken away and has to face criminal charges against him. Colonel Leetile Kakuli from the province’s disciplinary management team, said, "The police should be there to protect women and children, not commit crimes against them." "He has brought the SAPS into disrepute," said Kakuli, adding that the media attention helped to secure Maratshane’s dismissal. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate opened an investigation into the matter following the release of the footage, and have since pursued a criminal case against Maratshane. In a statement, the IPID said: "The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Free State has agreed with the recommendations of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) that Warrant Officer Ernest Maratshane should be prosecuted for assault. The DPP has decided that the suspect be prosecuted for two (2) counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH)." The case is due to be heard on August 12. Maratshane has also been implicated in other criminal misconduct, including the theft of television sets from an accident scene, and pointing a firearm at an unarmed person. Both IPID and the provisional disciplinary committee said it was thanks mostly to exposure by the media that Maratshane was fired. http://www.enca.com/south-africa/smithfield-cop-fired-assault-woman
