A large group of foreign nationals then gathered in protest. Thousands of people, who appeared to be foreign nationals, erected a burning barricade in the middle of Mahatma Gandhi Road in Durban's Point district on Tuesday afternoon. A section of the group were armed with pangas (machetes). Police later managed to douse the barricade with a water cannon. Police have also retaliated with teargas and have fired rubber bullets to disperse them after stones were thrown at the officers. It is alleged the group of foreign nationals started threatening South Africans in the CBD, in retaliation for the violence that has been directed at their countrymen in the past few weeks. There was a large contingent of SAPS and metro police officers at the scene. Some appeared to be engaged in a mediation effort with what looked to be the leaders of the group. Earlier, police fired bullets at a crowd of locals gathered in Dr Pixley KaSeme Street (West) Street after a stand-off between several Pakistani shop owners and locals. The shop owners earlier managed to ward off looters, but the crowd of locals soon swelled and they started stoning passing cars and shop fronts. The crowd then set fire to a parked car.Shortly afterwards, Public Order Policing units arrived to disperse the crowd, and opened fire on them with rubber bullets. The police's riot squad were also on the scene. http://www.ecr.co.za/post/foreigners-stage-stand-durban/ More shops looted and burnt in KwaMashu - SAPS KZN Glynnis Breytenbach 13 April 2015 Police say rumours that two Somali people were killed in the area, are not true More shops looted and burnt at KwaMashu area last night Police had to work hard in a dangerous situation at KwaMashu area last night after foreign national shops were looted and some of them were burnt down.
