Mrs Annette Heunis remains in a critical condition in Eugene Marais Hospital after the mother was attacked by a black gunmen who rushed into their home and
bashed her in her face with a sewing machine. Mrs Heunis suffered crushed facial bones and and severe injuries to her left eye. Her daughter Nadia waged a courageous fight with a baseball bat against her mother's attacker - he bashed her with a baseball bat until she fell down, unconscious.
It wasn't really a 'robbery': he grabbed Annette's cellphone as he fled the home in Pretoria Moot. (attached: picture of Heunis before the attack is from her facebook page. )
--The attack occured on Friday between 1 and 2 am in their house in 14th Avenue, Pretoria Moot north of Pretoria.
Nadia's sister Lizaan Mong said her mother Annette Heunis 56 and her sister heard unusual sounds between 01h00 and 02h00 which woke them and their dogs up.
They saw a black man at the front door, claiming he was hungry. "When they told him to not bother them in the middle of the night, the man grabbed a garden-chair,
bashed in the front door and stormed inside. He took a sewing machine from the kitchen table and bashed the mother, Annette in the face with it repeatedly - injuring her badly.
Meanwhile the daugher Nadia desperately tried to find help from the gardener who lives in a cottage behind the house.
However when she couldn't find him she grabbed a baseball bat and attacked the gunman, (diverting his attention away from her mother) ' said Ms Mong. " She hit and kicked him several times but he got the bat away from her and beat her over the head with it, leaving her unconscious on the floor.
Nadia screamed just before she was hit and managed to get the gardener's attention - who ran around the house, revolver in hand and fired off warning shots.
"That was enough to have the attacker run away. He grabbed Nadia's cellphone and fled. In his haste he dropped a computer hard-drive which the police found -saying it came from a nearby home which had been burgled earlier in the day.
The police and the ambulance were on the scene within minutes.
Mong - whose husband also rushed to the scene - said the entire house was coated in blood.
"My mom and sister were taken to Eugene Marais hospital and are still there. My sister woke up and fortunately did not suffer brain damage,' she said.
The doctors suspect that she was bashed over the head repeatedly: she did suffer concussion and struggles to go to sleep,' the sister said.
"When she recovers she will move in with us. My mom is still critical. Her cheekbone, forehead, cheek bone and nose are broken. Her left eye is very badly damaged.
She will be taken to an eye-institute but doctors remain uncertain if she will recover her sight in that eye.'
Mong has opened two cases of attempted murder.
