It was a sunny Saturday when a mother from Moreleta Park and her 10-year-old son went to Makro in Silverlakes to buy him a rugby ball – but her day was spoiled when another customer slapped her three times in what the victim described as a racial attack.
Gaylyn Maartens, a leadership developer, and her son, Zane, visited the retail store last Saturday to buy him rugby equipment.
The petite Maartens and Zane were walking at approximately 10:30 through one of the isles, chatting about his love for rugby, when “two big women” passed them. They were pushing a trolley with two children inside.
“The children sat in the trolley, shouting and screaming. I could not hear my son. I turned around and told the children to shut-up,” said Maartens.
SHE STARTED RIPPING MY CLOTHES AND SLAPPED ME THROUGH THE FACE AGAIN AND AGAIN...
She said before she could say another word, one of the women started screaming at her: “You do not speak to my children like that,” and then she felt her left cheek burning.
“She started ripping my clothes and slapped me through the face again and again. I just stood there. Feeling humiliated while my son cried and screamed, ‘please do not hurt my mother’.”
Veronica Naudé, the marketing manager of Makro heard the commotion and took Zane away from the scene. “We immediately phoned our risk team to handle the situation.”
Maartens said the management asked her whether she would like to press charges.
“I did want to press charges, but the management took me to a coffee shop and bought me a cup of coffee,” she said. “I was traumatised and could not muster the energy to say a word. They told me they had phoned the police, but apparently they had not.”
While Maartens sat at the coffee shop, the two women and the children walked out of the door. “I think it was a racial attack and Makro could not even show me any footage of the episode.”
Naudé said the shop could not really act against the culprits as Maartens declined to press charges.
“We need a good reason to detain people.”
Naudé said the cameras in that specific isle were switched off.
“Maartens spoke to our head office last Monday and she was happy we did the best we could. I thought the issue was resolved.”
But Maartens, who said she spent thousands of rands per month at Makro, was not happy with the outcome. “They (management) did not even get hold of the assaulter’s name,” she said.
Naudé said: “I know what the women looked like, but they did not buy anything. Therefore, we could not confiscate their Makro-cards.”
Naudé said Maartens could have complained at the customer desk about the conduct of the children and should not have shouted at them.
Maartens said she would never set foot in Makro again and wanted to warn customers to rather keep quiet when somebody else’s children are misbehaving.
She said she did not have any visible marks from the slapping, but could not sleep at night.
“The whole episode keeps on repeating itself like a cheap Hollywood movie.”
