Residents despondent during black out Residents share their thoughts about load shedding “Load shedding definitely has a negative impact on the alarm systems of houses,” says Caleb Finn, spokesperson for the Florida Blockwatch. Yvette Barnes, a Discovery resident says she feels very “exposed” during load shedding. “I have a back-up battery for my alarm system which is supposed to last eight hours but as soon as my power gets cut, I recieve an SMS from ADT informing me that my battery is low.” Unarmed alarm systems and ineffective electric fencing cause residents to fear for their lives. “Four young men attempted to burgle a house in Seventh Street, Delarey, during load shedding last week Tuesday. The owner of the house was woken by the noises of the alleged thieves and immediately went to check what was happening. As soon as he saw the thugs, he reached for his gun and shot at them,” explains Theodore de Beer, a resident in Delarey. Nobody was wounded or killed. Load shedding may or may not welcome housebreakers to implicate criminal activities. Finn has not heard any direct cases of house burglaries during load shedding. “Load shedding has affected the alarm systems which resulted in it being faulty. Some people have had to replace their alarm batteries frequently.” The police failed to confirm or deny whether there have been burglaries during load shedding. Report any suspicious vehicles or persons to your local block watch organisation and the relevant police station. http://roodepoortrecord.co.za/2015/03/10/residents-despondent-during-black-out/
