24 Feb 2015 - Port Elizabeth - Members of an Eastern Cape family recently sold their house to move to Iraq to fight for Islamic State terrorists
Net24 reported on Tuesday that one of the daughters, who was recently married, left her husband behind. Another married daughter remained behind in Port Elizabeth.
The family's details are known by Die Burger.
An expert says it is inevitable that there will be South African Islamic State supporters, as the militant group reportedly has cells in at least 60 countries.
About half of its combatants in Iraq and Syria are foreigners, Professor Hussein Solomon, a lecturer in political science at the University of the Free State, told Netwerk24.
heT Daily Maverick recently reported that a Johannesburg man, using the pseudonym Abu Hurayra al-Afriki, is believed to be the first South African jihadi who has travelled to Syria
to fight for the Islamic State terrorists. He is believed to have flown to Turkey before travelling overland to Syria. The Port Elizabeth family is believed to have used the same route.
According to Solomon, the Islamic State uses social media to target the youth, and romanticises the movement, offering sharia law as the answer to problems in countries such as Syria and Iraq. However, this is not the case, he argued.
It is also a violation of South African law to fight in a foreign country, according to the report.
Meanwhile, it emerged last week that eleven terror suspects with links to the Islamic State and al-Qaeda and on a global terror watch list may consider using South Africa as a base.
