The working-class smallholders experience a 'drastic increase in violent house robberies,' said the Community Policing Forum-chairman Duan Engelbrecht. ----------------- RUDOLPH AND COLIN POTGIETER SHOT AND INJURED: ---------------- Mrs Alta Potgieter told Die Rekord that her husband Rudolph and son Colin were shot Monday 19h00 by two gunmen just outside their smallholding during a violent confrontation. The black gunmen ambushed and tied up the Afrikaner men - however Rudolph, fearing for the lives of his family, managed to get lose of his bonds and tried to push the gunmen away. Rudolph was then shot twice at point blank range: once in his left ear and once in his chest. Her son Rual then rushed to their -- (by law required to be locked up) gun from the gunsafe, rushed back and fired towards the gunmen - at which point they fired back, injuring the oldest son Colin in the chest. The two men now are at the academic hospital in Pretoria and after a week now are 'out of danger' "My husband is in terrible pain and his eardrum has burnt but he can already get up and speak to me. My son has to get more scans before the doctors decide how to remove the bullet, which was lodged in his back'. "He's walking with difficulty because of the bullet.' Meanwhile Alta is terrified of remaining at the smallholding. "We are too terrified to go outside, we cannot live normal lives, there have been so many armed attacks against the smallholdings.' Constable Singo from the SAPS confirmed that a house robbery on Haakdoringboom Road allegedly turned violent when the home owner tried to fight off the perpetrators. The victim was allegedly shot in the back. According to the police, the home owner's dog was also shot in the leg and sustained critical injuries. Singo said that three armed suspects fled the scene with various workshop tools and a bicycle. No arrests have been made. "A case of house robbery and attempted murder has been opened and the police will continue with the investigation, " said Singo. Santi Steinmann from Netcare confirmed that their helicopter was activated to airlift the man to a nearby medical facility.
