2014 farm-attack statistics: joint media conference by AfriForum and Transvaal Agricultural Union of South Africa:
Reported by Mariska Batt
15 January, 2015 "The civil rights organisation AfriForum and the agricultural union TAU SA today announced the statistics for farm attacks and farm murders committed during 2014 at a joint media conference in Centurion.
-- A total of 277 farm attacks of which the details could be verified by the two organisations were carried out during 2014. A total of 67 farm murders could be verified for the same year.
-- The figures also show that since the year 1990, there have never been a higher verified number of farm attacks than the 277 in the year 2014.
"There also is a systematic increase in the annual number of farm murders since 2011."
Also: since 1 January 2015, nine farmers have already been murdered.
Both AfriForum and TAU SA expressed their concern over the fact that pres. Jacob Zuma over the weekend appealed to farmers "to do more to improve the living conditions of their workers"-- while at the same time,
Zuma was not willing to make pronouncements on the fact that so many thousands of white farmers have already been murdered (since 1990).
The two organisations announced they will in the near future write to the secretary general of the ANC, Gwede Mantashe, to request a conversation with the ANC leadership.

Land grabbers make death threats – AfriForum
by Esmarie Prinsloo on 03 December, 2013
AfriForum has announced that the organisation will assist farmers to organise against land grabs. This came after the occupation of a farm in the Howick district this weekend. Mr Peter Train, owner of the farm, approached AfriForum after members of the Msomi family had cut the fences on his farm numerous times and allowed their cattle to graze on his land.
“The farm belongs to the black man,” one of the Msomi sons had told the farmer. The farmer’s wife had received death threats.
“AfriForum will assist farmers to organise in order to be able to act against these types of irregularities. Farmers must be able to exist in a safe environment,” said Ian Cameron, Head of Community Safety at AfriForum.
The Msomis were arrested last Friday for malicious damage to property after illegally entering the farm, but they were released by the Howick police with a warning to appear in court on Monday, 2 December 2013. Both the Msomi men and four other unknown males were on the farm again on Sunday, this time armed with knopkieries, sticks and an axe.
“AfriForum has requested the prosecutor to regard the matter as urgent. The alleged perpetrators were arrested again and the case was postponed to 23 January 2014 for further investigation. The Msomi men were warned again to stay away from the farmer until the case was heard,” said Chris Fourie, Organiser for AfriForum in KwaZulu-Natal.
“Government is failing in its duty to ensure safety on farms. To this day, no discernable effort was made to safeguard farmers,” Cameron said.

three in North West, one in Limpopo, one in KZN and three in the Free State
-- Johan van der Merwe writes on 8 JaNUARY 2015 The new year started with tragedy for five families who are grieving over the murders of loved ones on farms.
The most recent victim was
Mrs Susan Kotze van Lephalale in Limpopo - strangled to death in her farm house.
Three of the murders up to 8 January 2015 were in North West province, one in Limpopo and one in KwaZulu Natal.
This statistic is added to the eleven murders which took place on farms countrywide during the month of December 2014 said General Chris van zyl of the Transvaal AGricultural union.
"It is clear that previously 'peaceful areas' have now been activated with an increase in farm attacks and this includes the north coast and the south coast of KwaZulu Natal province.
It is my opinion that there is a centralised, deliberate attempt to geographically spread violent attacks against farms so that it provides an optimum impact across a much greater area than previously was done, he said.
"This tendency is also visible in
Mpumalanga, the East Cape and the West Cape.

Clive Bowers murder on Bundu Estate in White River might be due to theft of flatscreen tv for the phosphor used in Nyaope drugs:
Murder: Clive Bowers killed by suspected "Plasma TV killers" White River
http://lowvelder.co.za/244750/resident-bundu-estate-murdered/
Reported by: Nicolene Smalman and Johanri Coetzee, The Lowvelder:
14 January 2015 WHITE RIVER – A resident of Bundu Estate, Mr Clive Bowers, was murdered in his home last night.
According to provincial police spokesman Col Leonard Hlathi, an unknown number of suspects gained entry to his home at about 23:30 by breaking a sitting-room window.
“They surprised Bowers and sprayed him with pepper spray after which he was shot. He died later. It is not clear if his own firearm was used in the attack, ” Hlathi said.
Although Lowvelder has been informed that it was in fact Bowers who sprayed the intruders with pepper spray, Hlathi stood by the fact that, according to his information, the deceased was sprayed. The suspects fled with various stolen items, most of which were later recovered. This included a firearm.
Bowers’ wife, Ms Renate Wagner, was also in the house, but didn’t sustain any injuries.
She posted the following on her Facebook profile on September 18:
--- “beware: there is a gang of thugs out to steal flat screen TVs. They are after some kind of powder, which is coating a ‘card’ inside the TV, which they believe is a drug – total myth! We have had four TVs stolen on the Bundu Estate, ours included”.
Lowvelder went to the scene early this morning and found the Wagner couple’s domestic worker at the house. She said that she had been working for them for 24 years and that this had been the third time the couple had been targeted by criminals in their home.
“It was a terrible thing that happened. I cried when I spoke to the neighbours this morning,” she said. A security guard at the gate leading to the estate, said that “Bundu (estate) is a bad place” and that a lot of “tsotsi’s came there last year.
Hlathi is in the process of gathering more information to compile a media statement. He requested anyone with information to contact White River’s head of detectives, Lt Thokozane Zungu on 082-449-0334.
