A 45-year-old man named as Jonathan Booysen has appeared in Bellville Magistrate's Court on Wednesday for stabbing three people with a pair of scissors in the Boston Pick n Pay store on Monday.
Jonathan Booysen appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday to face three charges of attempted murder.
It was reported that on Monday a man had walked into the store and stabbed a customer, a bakery assistant and a merchandiser.
At the time, Pick n Pay management said the man had brought the scissors into the store and had started stabbing people in an “unprovoked attack”.
Witnesses reported he had approached the bakery where he stabbed a woman customer about nine times before the baker’s assistant was stabbed in the neck and back.
The merchandiser was stabbed when he attempted to confront the assailant.
None of the victims were named in the news media.
Staff at the store said he was not familiar to them and not a regular customer.
The man was apprehended by store security before police arrested him.
The three injured people were taken to hospital.
Tamra Veley, a spokeswoman for Pick n Pay, said the bakery assistant was still recovering in hospital while the other two had been discharged.
Booysen is expected back in court on Thursday after the matter was postponed for a district surgeon to assess him.
He remains in custody.
