Cape Town - An attempted burglary ended the life of a 58-year-old Somerset West man on Christmas night.
Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana, spokesman for the Western Cape police, said yesterday the man died in hospital.
“He was arriving at his home around 9pm when two men attacked him. They shot him and he was taken to hospital, where he died,” said Kinana.
“There is no indication that anything was stolen. It was an attempted burglary.”
Kinana said police could not confirm “how many times he was shot”, but a source told Weekend Argus the man had been shot twice in the head.
Kinana saied: “The suspects have not been arrested. The police are investigating a case of murder and it is at a sensitive stage.”
Meanwhile, police are hunting for five black men who robbed and tried to kill a man in Parow earlier this week.
Kinana said the “unidentified men” entered the house on Smith Street early on Christmas Eve.
“They demanded money from the man they found in the house. We are told he is the owner of the house. He was with a female friend at the time,” said Kinana.
“Then the suspects searched him and took an undisclosed amount of money.”
“The police are investigating a case of house robbery and attempted murder.”
A Parow resident told the newspaper that crime had increased in the area after the local Parow West Neighbourhood Watch was “disbanded recently for allegedly drinking while on patrol, and assaulting members of the public”.
- In Manenberg, a number of apparent gang shootings have been reported this week, with residents taking to Facebook to describe running gun fights between rival gangsters.
Police spokesman Frederick van Wyk said officers were aware of the situation.
“The areas affected will be monitored and members will be deployed as is needed. We encourage the community to report any gang activity that could lead to gang violence,” he said. - Weekend Argus
