Violent crimes increased dramatically in South Africa *ISS
Violent crimes that South Africans fear most including murder, attempted murder and robbery have increased dramatically over the past two years, the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) said.
This as cases of armed robberies, burglaries, murder, attempted murder and serious assaults tend to noticeably increase over the festive season.
ISS crime and justice information hub manager Lizette Lancaster said an analysis of the monthly national crime data for the five years from April 2006 to March 2011 revealed that murder and serious assault increased by as much as 50% during December each year.
It was also found that burglary increased by 8% during this period.
“(Armed) House robberies (of entire families) increase in the months leading up to the festive season, starting in October and remaining high in December, dropping off by about 11% in January,” said Lancaster.
Police reports after the launch of the operation indicated that a total of 99 suspects had been arrested for hijackings, 447 for house and business robberies, and 724 for rape and sexual assault in KwaZulu-Natal alone.
