This was one of three consecutive attacks on the same block. 29 September 2014 -- Tjaart and his wife Elma, whose residence is in Barklay Road, were attacked by two male teenagers after they returned from a day out. "Tjaart and Elma arrived home shortly after 20:00 and entered the house from the front and locked up behind them", says neighbour Pieter Jordan. One of the intruders grabbed hold of her arm as she started screaming. "It sounded like a girl screaming at the top of her lungs", says Pieter's son Charles. "I was outside locking up my father's bakkie when I heard Elma scream. I ran to the wall and lifted my body halfway up in order to see what was happening. As my head cleared the wall, someone shot at me. Luckily he missed", Schalk said. According to Inspector Tommy Tomlinson (spokesperson for the SAPS Dunnottar) the armed man walked up to the kitchen door while Tjaart was approaching from the inside after he heard his wife screaming. The gunman then fired one shot at close range, penetrating Tjaart's right shin. He then accidentally dropped the gun, picked it up and fired a second round which entered Tjaart's left shoulder. The intruders fled and ran down Barklay Road toward Nicolls Road. Shortly after SAPS Dunnottar arrived at the scene, they received another report of gunshots fired, this time a block away. They immediately dispatched vehicles to the scene. "After the intruders left the original scene, they approached a man residing in Nicolls Road while he was closing his gate", inspector Tomlinson said. The suspect fired at the man, shooting him in the right cheek. The victim was transported to Pholosong Hospital by his sister. His wallet and cell phone was stolen", inspector Tomlinson reported. Paramedics managed to stabilise Tjaart and transported him to Pholosong Hospital. He passed away at 01:00 the next morning.
