Rugby-rage - Parent of opposition player and his son beat KES-pupil Matthew Germishuizen 17 into a concussion: youth needs four days to recover at Union hospital, Alberton:
27 August 2014 - Maroela Media, the online publication of Afriforum civil rights group, reports that 17-year-old Matthew Germishuizen of Alberton was rushed to Union Hospital with serious injuries after he was assaulted by
a co-player's parents at a match between Alberton and Roodepoort rugby clubs on Saturday. The youth needed four days in hospital to recover, reports Maroela Media journalist Phillip Bruwer.
Matthew's mother Ramona told Maroela Media on Wednesday that her son was taken to Union hospital on the prevous saturday at around 11h30am.
Her son was assaulted by the dad of a player in the opposing club and by the man's son.
Matthew is a grade-11 of the prestigious King Edward VII School (KES) and plays for the Germiston Simmer rugby club's under 18s team.
"My husband Louwtjie is one of Simmers' trainers and witnessed the attack,' she said.
Reportedly the attack took place after a Roodepoort player objected to a decision by the referee - who then handed him a red card.
The player's dad then insisted that the red card be withdrawn - however the referee blew the whistle ending the game before its appointed time.
"My son threw his hands up in the air, because their team had won. The youth who got the red card stormed my son and beat him with his fist,' she said.
A fracas followed during which the father of the opposing player also intervened and assaulted Matthew.
His father Louwtjie tried to protect his son and also was beaten in the face: losing two teeth.
After 'the situation was brought under control' Matthew was stabilised by paramedics before he was rushed to Union Hospital's intensive-care unit.
The bones in his nose and an eye-socket were broken, and Matthew sustained consussion which caused his brain to swell.
He underwent surgery Tuesday to repair his broken nose.
"He (Matthew) now is recovering at home. He is still very disoriented and his left eye remains swollen shut. We don't know if there will be any permanent damage,' said Ramona.
Matthew has not yet returned to schoo
The attack was condemned in a statement from the Golden Lions Rugby Union. "We want to make it clear that
physical and verbal abuse of any kind on any level in rugby will not be tolerated, said the GLRU's spokesman.
They are investigating and plan to hold a hearing on 2 September. Maroela Media is awaiting comment from the police about the incident.
