Afrikaans story:
STELLENBOSCH. -Aug 10 2014 - Die Burger reports: If it hadn't been for his quick reaction to an armed attacker, Alex Bekker, 40, who works as a security official at the Cape Town Airport,
may not have survived the armed attacker storming towards him with a sharpened screwdriver, reports Afrikaans Daily die Burger from Stellenbosch near Cape Town.
He got into a struggle early on Tuesday-mornng with a man who had broken into his kitchen.
There are many 'breakins' and house robberies in the Boland region this past year, the newspaper reports.
"Earlier we reported about the Burton family who were robbed by four men on their farm Cottage Stream near Sir Lowrys Pass.
There also were numerous reports elsewhere of the four-member balliclava-gang aorund Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Helderberg and Paarl attacking farms and homes.
Bekker said he was awake at around 02h15 because he was in pain from an earlier injury to his shoulder.
"I suddenly heard a clapping nouse, jumped up and found a man with a headlamp in our kitchen: he tried to blind me with the powerful beam".
It was dark and had been raining but he saw the man's silhouette with the screwdriver in his hand. "He stormed me and tried to stab me. I realized I had to do something or I would lose my family.
With his third or third lunge towards me I managed to hit his elbow. He fell and slid down on the wet floor - then he ran out.
Bekker said the incident has left his wife and children, 7 and 9, badly traumatised.,
