Survived: Gert Robbertze and friend Tina Santon help SAPS capture armed robber: Magalieskruin
Ryno Ellis reports on 26 June 2014 that a brave couple who were 'sick and tired of robbers terrorizing their neighbourhood' recently helped the SAPS capture
an armed robber in an 'adrenaline-laden hunt'.
Gert Robbertze and friend Tina Sandton live in an apartment complex in Magalieskruin.
On Tuesday June 24 2014 chased the thug for more than 2km before the beefy, powerfully built Robbertze captured the man with 'one hell of a rugby dive'.
His muscles ached afterwards. 'I don't know where I got the strength but my adrenaline kicked in and I was just thinking that if I let
him get away today he would probably attack and injure someone else tomorrow.'
Their complex has been terrorized by armed robbers for the past month or so.
"they gain access by taping up the electronic eye of the access gates,' he said.
The CCTV footage also showed that the group of robbers simply walked in after taping up the electronic eye after a resident drove through the gates.
Robbertze and Santon saw two black males doing exactly the same thing at an apartment block next to theirs.
He immediately phoned the SAPS and kept watching the two men.
When the cops showed up in their marked vehicle, the thugs ran away. So Robbertze and Sandton chased them with their
sports vehicle. He said it was a chase one usually sees in action-movies. The police captured one thug while the couple chased the other one.
They followed him for more than 2 km - then caught up with the man in a veld. Robbertze climbed from the vehicle and chased him on foot, even jumping across a wall,
while Santon followed in the vehicle. We struggled for a bit but when I twisted his arm and pushed him to the ground, the police arrived and arrested him.
Both thugs were arrested for 'theft'.
