Bob Combe (65) was attacked by the men after he refused them access to his home. "I knew that if they got inside the house, they would spend the weekend raping my family... I just couldn't let that happen'... He took a hard beating, including being hit on the head with a gun.
-- “I refused because I had three women inside the house, my wife, my daughter and her friend who was visiting. I knew that if they got inside the house, they would spend the weekend raping my family. I just couldn’t let that happen,” the brave Combe insisted, even after the thugs threatened to kill him. I would rather they shot me there and then outside my home than for them to gain access to the house.”
-- It was at 11.30am on June 7 when Combe was approached from behind by the three men. “I felt a tap on my shoulder and when I turned around, they were standing behind me.” Combe was instructed to not make a noise and to lead them inside the gate. He refused and tried to make a run for it. “I unfortunately tripped and fell while trying to run away from the house. They caught me and one of them pointed a gun to my head. He asked me if I wanted to die. I told him no and they forced me up again and led me towards the gate, which was about 3 feet open.” When they reached the gate, Combe blocked the entrance with his body and a fight ensued. While this went on, the gardener came out and noticed what was going on. “The gardener pleaded with the men in IsiZulu to let me go but they refused.” The gardener ran back inside in panic to tell Combe’s wife, Glynis, what was happening. She pushed the panic button. Outside, the thugs became frustrated with Combe’s tenacity and started beating him up to gain entrance into the yard. “Two of them held me while the third one beat me. He hit me on my forehead with a gun. Even after I had fallen to the ground after a punch he continued to beat me and trample me down with his foot.” They took the badly beaten man’s wedding ring and made off with it, including his cap. Moments after, PHS COPS Security arrived and the bleeding Combe got into the car with them to chase after the criminals. Unfortunately, they got away. Combe was treated on the scene by paramedics. An angry Glynis says she is mortified at the lack of respect young people have for their elders. “It makes me so angry that a group of young men like that can have such little respect for their elders and go as far as beating up an old man,” Glynis said.
“I wish I could look them into their eyes and ask them that if this was their grandfather or father, would they do the same. And how they would feel if something like this had to happen to their own family.”
Norkem Park SAPS spokesman, Capt Lesibana Molokomme, confirmed a case of armed robbery had been opened.
