Platinum Weekly: May 30 2014: Rustenburg – Bernard Friedman and his friend Stanley Nathan were looking forward to a pleasant day of golf with friends at the Hunters Rest Hotel on Sunday morning, 25 May 2014, when a speeding Nissan Qashqai at 11:45 lost control of his vehicle and collided head-on with Nathan’s Volkswagen GTI, approximately 50 km from Rustenburg on the Magaliesburg road. The Qashqai’s driver died on impact and the two friends were seriously injured. The first two people on the scene dragged the Qashqai driver’s body, as well as Friedman and Nathan from the vehicles, one of them claiming to be a paramedic. They proceeded to remove the accident victims’ wallets and cell phones before driving off, leaving the seriously injured men lying next to the road with no means to summon assistance. A family driving home to Rustenburg from Lovers Rock arrived on the scene and offered what assistance they could to keep the two men comfortable until the arrival of the ambulance, about twenty minutes later. The injured were treated on the scene and friends arranged for the vehicles to be towed away. The family was notified and Mrs Jerne Friedman was informed that her husband would be airlifted to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg, but he unfortunately passed away at 14:30 due to the severity of his injuries before this could be accomplished. Stanley Nathan remains in high care in Milpark. No information regarding the driver of the Qashqai was available at the time of the Platinum Weekly’s going to press. Bernard Friedman was born in Worcester in the Cape on 6 December 1937, obtained a law degree at the University of Cape Town and practised as an attorney for more than fifty years. Although residing in Johannesburg, he maintained strong small-town values and was highly respected in many spheres of life as a kind, gentle, charitable, yet strong man by all who encountered him. Outside of his family, golf was his great love. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jerne, sons Marc, Anton and Nicholas and his sister, Ruth. The funeral took place at the West Park Cemetery on 27 May. http://www.platinumweekly.co.za/articleA472.html
