A member of a community safety group in the north of Pretoria was shot and killed on Sunday morning after attending an emergency call.
Russell McKinnen(62), who is a member of the Amandasig Action Group (AAG), attended to a call for assistance that was reported in Amandasig.
When McKinnen arrived on the scene he was confronted by three suspects, one of whom shot him in the head.
Riaan Moolman, chairman of the AAG, said that the action group is shocked by the loss of a great member.
He explained that the AAG has an information system which keeps members informed of possible crime in their immediate vicinity which they use to assist the police in the fight against crime.
He added that McKinnen (and fellow sector members) learnt of a member who possibly needed assistance and went to offer his help.
Moolman said that McKinnen was very devoted to his work and that he will be sorely missed.
“Russell McKinnen has been a member of the executive committee of AAG since its inception about five years ago and is one of the most dedicated persons I have ever met. The community of Amandasig will miss him dearly,” Moolman said.
A murder case was opened at the Akasia police station.
