Double-murders: Katrien 62 and Chris Jooste, 64: Grootvlei farmers shot dead by 5 black males while delivering meat in Shoshanguve township (Nov 2011)
-- SAPS allowed the escape of "Buster' Romeo Mathebula, 33 - with trial starting in September 2014...
Nov 2011 - Journalist Ryno Ellis writes on 14 June 2014:
Granddaughter Chyree Jooste 23, is angry that the man suspected of shooting to death her grandparents, was allowed to escape from police custody.
The elderly Afrikaner farmers were delivering meat to Shoshanguve Blok A township when they were shot dead by five black male gunmen.
Mrs Katrien Jooste was apparently busy writing an invoice for the customer when her husband was shot in the stomach, and she was shot in the chest.
She died instantly, while Chris died enroute to the Ga-Rankuwa government hospital. The black male who is suspected of pulling the trigger of the gun used to kill both Afrikaners, "Buster' Romeo Mathebula, 33, escaped from police custody while he was appearing for another criminal charge in May from GaRankuwa magistrate's court. He was the last of the five black male suspects which were arrested, wrote Ellis. Granddaughter Chyree said 'it made me furious when realizing that Buster escaped.' He escaped after the SAPS had spent many months searching for him. "I never thought that the SAPS would let him slip through their fingers that easily,' said the granddaughter.
"The family prays for Buster's capture and that justice will prevail.
"Their trial and conviction for these murders will not bring back Ouma and Oupa, but will assure that these men will pay
for what they have done.'
She said the State has a strong case against the five suspects - and if Buster cannot be rearrested soon the trial will be postponed.
She said despite the fact that three years have passed since their cruel murders, the family still mourn and long for the Jooste couple.
"They formed an important part of our family. Their deaths left a large hole in our lives.'
The case will resume in September 2014 at the Pretoria High Court.
The SAPS has asked that anyone who has information about the escaped man may contact warrant officer
Piet Moeti at tel 072-286-5404 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
