Brian Shalkoff 65, world-famous Newtown restaurateur, dies after horrific assault by four black males against him and life partner Eduan Naude - 3 July 2013 SAPA. Pic: Juan Manguia - Brian Shalkoff, 65, who was a co-owner of the Gramadoelas-restaurant in Newtown, Johannesburg, has died of his horrific internal and external injuries a month after he and his life-partner Eduan Naude were assaulted during a 'robbery attack,' reports The Star on Wednesday.
The SAPS confirmed to Farmitracker that Shalkof and Naude were attacked for four armed black males when they arrived at their residence in Hillbrow in the early-morning hours from their restaurant in nearby Newtown. Shalkoff was 'horribly assaulted,' police confirmed - and he and Naude, also injured but less severely - were rushed to Millpark Hospital with extensive internal and external injuries. The police did not say what kind of weapons were used to assault Shalkoff.
The violence used was very excessive and out of proportion to the small gains: the murderers only took laptop computers, cellphones and some cash. The SAPS was unable to say whether this vicious attack was due to the fact that the men were a homosexual couple. "All these aspects are still being investigated." Naude also was injured: but it was Shalkoff who received the full brunt of the assault. Naude confirmed to The Star that the life-supporting machines keeping Shalkoff 's body functioning, were turned off.
The two men were devoted life-partners for the past 45 years and shared all the work and the financial management of the restaurant. Ever since its founding in 1967, The Gramadoelas restaurant has been a hugely popular venue for the theatre patrons of the nearby Market Theatre and also was world-famous, with international VIPs like Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain and ex-president Bill Clinton on their guest-lists. It serves traditional South African foods and is known for its beautiful decor and genteel atmosphere.
